The New Orleans Saints have released Curtis Lofton.

The team had been shopping around the middle linebacker for trade possibilities. Lofton has been the leading tackler for the Saints since his arrival in 2012. He was also a captain last season.

Lofton was due a $4.5 million roster bonus and had a $9 million salary cap number for 2015.

Lofton was considered by many as one of the team's best players and leaders.

Last season, the linebacker played in all 16 games with 99 tackles, 45 assists and one forced fumble. It was one of the most productive seasons in the three years he was with New Orleans.
