CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) - A grand jury met Thursday at the St. Bernard Parish courthouse to hear testimony about Parish President Dave Peralta.
Peralta faces sexual battery and stalking charges after his ex-wife accused him of raping her in their home in October 2013. The Attorney General's Office took over the case after the St. Bernard District Attorney's Office stepped aside.
The grand jury could not return a decision because there was no judge present, but state prosecutors said an indictment that would likely supersede current charges is almost a near-certainty.
Nearly every judge in the courthouse also recused themselves from the case, so a possible indictment won't be levied until an alternate judge is designated.
Sources say the grand jury will likely meet a few more times before that happens.
