Stolen car suspect leads police on chase

New Orleans police say a man in a stolen car led officers on a chase.

An officer was patrolling a stretch of Bundy Road on Wednesday morning when his police unit's license plate reader received an alert about a stolen car in the area.

When the officer parked next to the stolen black Nissan Altima and turned on his lights, the driver sped away. The driver, Preston Beard, jumped out of the vehicle in the 4800 block of Camelot Drive, but officers arrested him about a block away.

Investigators say the car was reported stolen from North Rampart and Marigny Streets the night of Feb. 16.

Beard was booked with illegal possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless operation and flight from an officer.
