Condemned Slidell apartments headed for demolition

SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - The Slidell City Council wants a condemned apartment building torn down within a week.

The council called a special Wednesday night meeting to take up the fate of the crumbling apartment complex.

Last week, a fire official ordered the power cut off because of safety concerns at the Westchester Apartments.

Friday, a city building official deemed the building unsafe and fourteen tenants had to move out immediately.

Residents say water leaks were common and the ceilings had fallen in some units. Some who spoke to FOX 8 say the building had been a mess for years.

Monday, Slidell Mayor Freddy Drennan said he had been trying to find help for the suddenly displaced residents, but realized even the Red Cross could not step in.

Drennan said, "This is not a natural disaster like a hurricane or a storm, that displaces a bunch of people. This is a situation where proper maintenance and upkeep was not kept with the building and usually in those cases the owner of the building tries to step up and do something."
