Former serviceman hopes to find girl he saved in iconic Katrina picture

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A picture that showed a bright spot in the dark days following Hurricane Katrina has a mystery attached to it.

Former Air Force Master Sergeant Mike Maroney, who participated in pararescues during the storm, said he vividly remembers pulling a little girl and her six family members off of a New Orleans rooftop.

The hug the little girl gave Maroney on Sept. 6, 2005, when he and his crew delivered her to Armstrong International Airport, went viral.

Maroney called it a brief moment of joy in what felt like a hopeless mission. Maroney said he wants people to spread the word that he is hoping to reconnect with the girl nearly a decade later.

The photograph was taken Airman 1st Class Veronica Pierce, but Maroney never got the little girl's name.

People on social media are using the hashtag #FindKatrinaKid to help find the girl. You can also tweet Maroney: @mikem3672.
