Miss. River reopened after strong odor reported

A one-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that was closed after an odor was reported near the Bonnet Carre Spillway in Norco has been reopened according to a spokesperson with the Coast Guard..

The Coast Guard said a ship was venting its tanks releasing Py gas, which smells like gasoline. The Coast Guard came to investigate and make sure there was no spill.

Nothing was spilled into the river. As part of the procedure, Coast Guard officials closed off the one mile stretch for one hour.

There were NO PROTECTIVE ACTIONS needed on the part of the public at this time. Odor reports may be made to the EOC at (985) 783-5050.
