PHOENIX (WVUE) - In Phoenix at the NFL owners meetings, the topic of Saints ownership came up in Coach Sean Payton's sit down with the media.
As Payton prepares for his ninth season with the team, he does so with the utmost confidence that team owner Tom Benson will be there full time as he has always been from the moment Payton was hired.
By now, the public knows the story of Benson and his new succession plan with ownership of both the New Orleans Pelicans and Saints, taking it out of the hands of his daughter Renee and grandchildren Rita and Ryan Leblanc, and into the hands of his wife, Gayle.
Benson's estranged family members have filed a lawsuit to stop the plan, stating that the Saints owner is mentally incompetent to make such decisions.
Payton said based on his daily interaction, that is not the case.
"I see Tom every day. So, when I have interaction and go down and visit with him, we'll talk about a lot of different topics. You know that is all going to take care of itself. His mind is as sharp as ever," Payton said.
Payton is confident his boss will lead the organization and he is equally as confident his quarterback, Drew Brees, can lead his team on the field.
Brees has been a hot topic this offseason. Most recently, he was the subject of possible trade rumors.
Payton said there was not one iota of truth to the rumors and said spending time trying to dispel them can result in wasted energy.
"We'll go nuts if we are responding to someone's speculation. I saw where we were going to trade him to the Jets from a New York writer, so you just wad that up and throw it in the garbage and hopefully it doesn't come across your eyes again," Payton said.
Payton also shot down the rumor that the Saints would be trading up to take former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
