SWAT standoff ends with arrest in Algiers

New Orleans Police worked a SWAT roll Wednesday night that lasted over two hours, before ending peacefully.

The incident occurred in the 2200 block of Westbend Parkway in Algiers. Police say that around 7 p.m., Damon Gilliam, 31, got into a fight with his 41-year-old ex-girlfriend outside of a store. He began to choke the woman before running away.

The woman's 14-year-old son saw Gilliam at a bus stop where the suspect pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the teen and threatened him.

Gilliam then ran into a nearby apartment where he has refused to come out, police say. He finally surrendered to police around 10:45 p.m.

Gilliam will be booked with charges including battery and aggravated assault. No one was injured in the incident.
