Deputies: Crawfish burglar flees scene, hides in wooded area

RAYNE, LA (WVUE) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office are looking for a man accused of stealing sacks of live crawfish.

Cary Gordon Bastian, 28, of Rayne, is wanted for simple burglary.

The APSO and LDWF responded to the 5200 block of Abbeville Highway on March 26 after getting a call about a burglary in progress. When investigators arrived, they learned Bastian had apparently fled the scene in a white Camero. Wildlife agents say he headed toward the Vermilion and Lafayette Parish line traveling at speeds over 100 mph.

The owner told deputies that he was noticing sacks of crawfish missing from an outside cooler that was locked. He told investigators that he had a person hiding at the premises all night in an attempt to identify the suspect responsible for stealing the crawfish. The witness reportedly told deputies he saw Bastian loading six bags of crawfish into the trunk of his Camero before driving off.

Arrest warrants were issued for Bastian. Deputies tried to catch him later in the day, but say he fled into a wooded area near his home in Vermilion Parish. Once arrested, he'll be charged with one count of simple burglary, one count of reckless driving and one count of aggravated flight from an officer.

If you can help investigators find Bastian, call the Acadia of Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Offices or LDWF at (800) 422-2511.
