NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A man who told police he found his father shot to death by two intruders inside the family's home now faces a charge for the murder.
Police say U.S. Marshals picked up 35-year-old Herbert Meyers III on Friday.
Meyers originally said that after an errand, he returned to his father's home in the 2400 block of Oriole Street on Sunday at about 11 p.m. and found 54-year-old Herbert Meyers Jr. lying on the floor wounded.
He said he heard voices and ran to his truck, grabbed a gun, returned to the house and started shooting. He said the intruders ran through the backyard and jumped a fence to escape.
Meyers Jr. died inside the home after being shot several times.
Detectives investigated the case all week and said neighbors came forward with information that led to the arrest.
"Our detectives have been working around the clock since then to develop leads, and I can tell you the community was a big deal in this case," said NOPD Commander Nicholas Gernon.
Meyers was taken into custody in Metairie and jailed in New Orleans.
