JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish residents received details on Tuesday about upcoming drainage improvements to the 7th Ward area (Old Jefferson).
According to a news release, the boundaries of the area to receive the greatest benefit are Airline Drive, Orleans Parish line to the East, River Road to the South, and St. George Avenue to the West.
The project has secured $600,000 in funding from the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) through a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Phase 1 (Design) of the Manson Ditch Drainage Improvement Project.
This project will provide for a new drainage pump station near Shrewsbury and a nearby railroad ditch that will pull water from the ditch and discharge into the detention pond at Earhart and Causeway Boulevard.
By pulling this water from the ditch, parish leaders say the local drainage systems that are connected to it will function at a greatly increased level and provide immediate positive impact to the surrounding area.
After the design is complete, FEMA will review all documents for an environmental assessment that will allow for an aggressive construction schedule placing this new station in operation as quickly as possible.
