State police have questions about what led to murder suspect's escape

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are trying to find a murder suspect who broke out of a van, took off his handcuffs, and fled in Mid-City.

The second day of the search for Lorenzo Conner, 24, has taken investigators out of state, but they believe he is still in New Orleans.

State police say there are a lot of questions about a gap in the search Tuesday morning, and who was actually in charge.

"I wish I can go back and change that. I can't," said Col. Michael Edmonson. "I said, 'who's in charge?' When I found out there was no lead agency and said someone has to take the lead, we took it."

Edmonson said Conner, who was being held for the 2011 murder of Nelson Smith, should be considered armed and dangerous.

He also said state health officials have already changed their prisoner handling procedures, but a full investigation continue as to what went wrong and apparent missteps in the search.
