NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Louisiana National Guard and state wildlife officials performed the annual Christmas Tree Drop in Bayou Sauvage in eastern New Orleans on Thursday.
They use recycled Christmas trees to establish a wave break in the refuge.
The tree jetties create a new marsh habitat by trapping sediment and building up a plantable structure which will eventually support native marsh grasses.
The project has re-established nearly 175 acres of marsh in Bayou Sauvage. That is nearly 212 football fields.
