SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A Slidell police officer was shot Friday night in the Olde Town area, and police have a suspect in custody.
The shooting happened outside a bar at the corner of First and Cousin streets.
Police said officers were called out to a disturbance at the bar at about 8:40 p.m. An officer confronted the suspect, and the incident escalated. Gunfire was exchanged, and the officer was struck once, according to Slidell police spokesman Daniel Seuzeneau.
Police captured the suspect with a K-9 unit after a brief chase. The suspect was hospitalized, but it was not immediately clear if the suspect was shot or sustained injuries in the chase. No names have been released.
The officer is hospitalized, but there is no word on his condition.
Olde Town is an entertainment district and popular weekend destination that was the scene of a fatal shooting in December 2013, in which two people were killed and six were wounded. The alleged shooter, Jamieon Chapman, was arrested two days later in Vermillion Parish.
