NORCO, LA (WVUE) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District is scheduled to practice removing and replacing 10-20 wooden needles at the Bonnet Carré Spillway.
The Corps performs the test when water is over the weir and passing through the needles to simulate conditions during an actual opening.
The next test will take place on Wednesday, April 8.
It takes approximately two hours to lift and replace the 10-20 needles.
The test is done during high water season as an opportunity to practice spillway operational and safety procedures, especially for new crew members.
As designed, the operation of the Bonnet Carré Spillway is very labor intensive and safe needle lifting and replacement as well as familiarization with the procedure are priorities.
The spillway near Norco is designed to spare New Orleans flooding.
It was last opened in 2011.
