Police warn of phone scam

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Mandeville Police Department say over the weekend someone claiming to be a representative from a utility company tried to scam nearly $1,000 from a north shore restaurant.

Authorities say the caller told someone at the "Triple Nickel Grill" on Florida Street that it had just half an hour to pay a purported overdue CLECO bill or else the power would be shut off. The business owner was told to make the payment via a Reloadit Card. Police say the restaurant owner made a couple of follow-up calls and was able to determine the call was a hoax.

Chief Rick Richard hopes all citizens and business owners will use this incident to beware of anyone soliciting payments via wire transfers or prepaid credit cards.

Authorities in Plaquemines Parish warned of a similar scam in February involving someone claiming to be with Entergy.
