NORCO, LA (WVUE) - For a brief time Wednesday morning, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened a tiny portion of its giant relief valve north of New Orleans.
Workers removed the 20 needles from one of the 350 bays of the Bonnet Carre Spillway as part of a test and training exercise.
While the Corps does not expect to open the spillway this spring, spokesmen said the test will prepare workers for future openings.
The Mississippi crested several days ago at over 14 feet above flood stage and is expected to fall in coming weeks.
Wednesday's test lasted about two hours.
