NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police on Thursday arrested a man they say filed a false police report.
Officers arrested 42-year-old Lowell Johnson in the 7600 block of Michigan Street in New Orleans East.
Police say Johnson originally told them that around 9 a.m. he went outside and started his 2008 Chevy Corvette that was parked in the driveway. Johnson said he went inside his home briefly, leaving the car running.
Moments later, he said he heard a loud crashing sound coming from outside. Johnson said he ran outside and watched as his car crashed into his neighbor's fence and two unknown black male juveniles were running from the wreckage.
Officers say Johnson then said he grabbed his pistol and fired two warning shots into the ground to scare the suspects. Johnson said the suspects then ran away.
Detectives later learned from a neighbor that Johnson made up the whole story and that he accidentally crashed the car himself.
When officers further questioned Johnson, they said he admitted that he lied because he didn't have insurance.
Johnson told detectives that he fired the shots into the ground to make his story look authentic.
