NOPD: Friday night Uptown homicide may be justifiable

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Police are investigating the death of a 55-year-old man in Uptown as a possible Justifiable Homicide.

After interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene in the 1300 block of General Ogden, police say that the 55-year-old victim was in a verbal altercation with his 25-year-old girlfriend that turned physical. Witnesses say the 55-year-old man was punching and kicking his girlfriend when a male neighbor jumped in to save the woman.

The neighbor held the 55-year-old man down while his girlfriend called the police. The neighbor told police that the 55-year-old man became unresponsive while he was restraining him. The 55-year-old man was taken to the hospital by EMS, where he later died.

Detectives brought the 43-year-old neighbor into custody for questioning and released him. Police say they will not press charges against the man at this time.

The incident occurred on April 10, around 9:38 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing and once complete, all information will be sent to the District Attorney's office.
