MORGAN CITY, LA (WVUE) - A woman who police say drove off the road and hit a garbage can was arrested a short time later when officers found her asleep in her car Morgan City Police received a complaint early Friday morning around 2 a.m. of a woman driving recklessly. Police were able to locate a car matching the same description on the side of the road. Police say the car's headlights were off, and a woman was asleep at the wheel.
Police identified the driver as 33 year old Dava Leonard of Berwick, Louisiana. Police say Leonard appeared to be in an impaired condition when they found her inside the car. She submitted to a field sobriety test which police say she performed poorly. Leonard was arrested on scene.
Through their investigation, Morgan City Police determined that before Leonard's arrest, she drove off the roadway and struck a garbage can. Following the arrest, deputies also searched her car. Officers found items determined to be drug paraphernalia inside Leonard's vehicle. Leonard was transported to the Morgan City Police Department where she submitted to an Intoxilyzer 5000 test which indicated a blood alcohol concentration of .27g%. She was booked and incarcerated.
Leonard has been charged with Reckless Operation of a Vehicle Improper Parking Driving while Intoxicated Hit and Run Driving No Drivers License Possession of drug paraphernalia.
