RACELAND, LA (WVUE) - A 3-year-old died Tuesday after falling into a Raceland drainage canal and being swept away by a strong current, according to Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre.

The incident happened at about 1:20 p.m. on Hospital Drive. Remy Dufrene was playing in his backyard when his caretaker went out to get him. He ran from her and fell into the rain-swollen ditch, his family said.

Webre said Immediate attempts to retrieve the boy were unsuccessful. LPSO personnel arrived and began a search of the canal. About 15 minutes later, the child's father found him in weeds about 75 yards downstream.
