JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish Council members discussed safety improvements along canals at Wednesday's council meeting.
The discussion comes after three fatalities in the past several days where cars drove into the canals.
Jefferson Parish says protecting its open canals is a top priority one day after a mother and daughter were killed when their car went into a canal on Veterans Blvd. near Clearview.
Jefferson Parish President John Young says putting up guardrails and covering some canals is already being discussed by the council.
The parish has more than 300 miles of unprotected canals that would need work, so Young says the council is looking at every option.
He says the main sticking point is financing the project would could cost millions. The parish will likely prioritize high traffic areas once a decision is made.
Last week the body of Jefferson Parish fireman David Yeomans was found inside of his pickup truck partially submerged in a canal at West Esplanade near Hessmer.
