Wounded St. Charles deputy improves

ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - The health of the St. Charles Parish deputy, shot three times last week, continues to improve.

Officials say Corporal Burt Hazeltine was able to walk Sunday, but faces another surgery Tuesday. He is currently listed in stable condition.

Corporal Hazeltine was shot in what the sheriff calls an apparent ambush on that occurred on April 16th in Paradis.

"Even with multiple gunshot wounds, Cpl. Hazeltine was able to return fire, but also radio vital information for other responding officers. One of his first comments on the police radio was to advise dispatch to alert the school board to divert school busses from the area. That speaks volumes to the caliber of officer Corporal Hazeltine is," Sheriff Craig Champagne said.

The sheriff's office is hosting a fundraiser to benefit Hazeltine's family.

Lunch and dinner will be sold for $10/plate Thursday, April 23rd at the Shriner's Hall located at 1940 Ormond Boulevard in Destrehan between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Hazeltine's accused shooter, John Paul Devillier, is in custody on a $1 million dollar bond.
