NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Delgado Community College will celebrate a milestone this week, as it breaks ground Friday on a long-awaited maritime and industrial center.
Administrators announced the new Delgado Maritime and Industrial Training Center will replace the existing one on Old Gentilly Road.
The new 18,750-square-foot building is designed by Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects of New Orleans. The $7 million project is funded by state bonds awarded to Delgado in 2007.
School administrators say the facility has earned a national and international reputation for providing high-quality maritime and industrial firefighting, radar, safety and U.S. Coast Guard-approved training.
They also say graduates can help Louisiana deal with a chronic workplace shortage, as many companies in the maritime, oil and gas, and safety/homeland security fields are unable to find enough qualified workers.
