Crews search for missing boater near Bayou Manchac

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Search and rescue crews scour Bayou Manchac in Ascension Parish for a boater who went missing Monday night.

Allen Fitzgerald, 24, of Prairieville, was last seen Monday night four miles upstream from the Amite River. According to a passenger that was with Fitzgerald, the two men were out boating in a 12-foot bateau with a six horsepower engine when they began taking on water.

Officials say the passenger in the front of the boat was able to jump in the water before the boat sank. He was able to make it to shore and to a house where he called 911 for help.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division along with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office and the St. Amant Fire Department began searching for Fitzgerald around 10 p.m. Monday night. The search was suspended at 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Search efforts are expected to resume at daylight Tuesday morning.
