For the second time in as many days, NOPD officers confronted with armed subjects resulted in gunfire and prompted a search in New Orleans East, according to a New Orleans Police Department spokesman.

The incident began Wednesday at about 8:20 p.m. when officers responding to a call reporting two men with guns in the area tried to stop possible suspects on Dinkins Street. The men took off running and the officers chased them, according to spokesman Officer Juan Barnes. One of the men then turned and fired a shot at the officers, Barnes said.

The officers did not return fire.

A police perimeter was set in the area of Benson, Curran, Aberdeen and Meyn, where police believed one of the gunmen was hiding. The suspects were not found and remain at large.

Wednesday night's incident comes less than 24 hours after police shot and killed 21-year-old man during an armed robbery in New Orleans East. Two other suspects have been arrested for their involvement in the incident.

The armed robbery happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday at a New Orleans East Dollar General, located in the 10600 block of Chef Menteur Highway. A 21-year-old male suspect was shot in the chest, officers say. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say a semi-automatic weapon was found near his body.
