ARABI, LA (WVUE) - An Arabi mother recovers after she says her son tried to kill her. St. Bernard sheriff's deputies say Jomeca Hawkins had to be rescued Thursday from her Coney Drive home in Arabi. Her son has been arrested. When emergency crews arrived, authorities say a neighbor was trying to help Hawkins who was unresponsive outside her home.
During her initial treatment, deputies say she told them her son, Joseph Andrews, tried to kill her by setting her home on fire. She also said her 19-year-old son has a bipolar disorder. Hawkins suffered smoke inhalation and had to be transported to Baton Rouge Hospital for medical care.
Authorities say they found her Joseph Andrews several blocks away and recovered two knives on him. He was not hurt. Andrews is booked with attempted murder of his mother and aggravated arson. The sheriff says Andrews has a criminal record that includes a prior drug arrest. His bond was set Friday at $250,000.
