Tourism week begins in New Orleans style

Tourism leaders kicked off a week in the spotlight in true New Orleans style.

Monday begins National Travel and Tourism Week and New Orleans is one of 75 cities around the country hosting events.

New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau President Stephen Perry says the industry employs 80,000 people locally and last year, 9.5 million tourists generated $6.8 billion in visitor spending.

"Tourism is jobs, tourism is tax revenue," says Perry. "Tourism is the funding of all of our schools and our roads and our police. But you know what else it also is, tourism is inspiration. Think about when you travel, what do you do. You get out of your own skin for a minute, recharge. We get to do that to the world."
