LULING, LA (WVUE) -

Deputies in St. Charles Parish gathered to remember those killed in the line of duty and to honor one who survived.

Corporal Burt Hazeltine was shot just three weeks ago while working a traffic detail.

"I'm feeling well. My recovery is doing better than I expected," Hazeltine said. "I will return to duty shortly, limited duty at first but I will eventually return to full duty and looking forward to it."

Hazeltine joined his fellow officers Tuesday morning in Luling to remember those who died in the line of duty.

In 2014, Louisiana saw three officers killed while serving their communities in St. Landry and Vermillion parishes and Denham Springs.

At the service, Sheriff Greg Champagne also presented Hazeltine with a Purple Heart Award.

Hazeltine said he is thankful for all the messages of support as he recovers.
