GIBSON, LA (WVUE) - A Gibson, Louisiana man admitted to beating his girlfriend multiple times while she was pregnant, resulting in the death of her unborn child, according to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say they learned of the incident on Tuesday morning.
During the investigation, detectives say they learned of multiple physical altercations between a 27-year-old woman and 36-year-old Tyson Cheavis. Officers say Cheavis is the woman's live-in boyfriend.
The woman went to the hospital weeks prior to the arrest, detectives say. She claims that she went to the hospital after allegedly being attacked by Cheavis. Officers say she was examined and informed that her unborn child did not have a heartbeat.
Detectives picked up Cheavis on Tuesday morning in the 100 block of Jimmy's Trailer Court. He was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office where he was questioned by detectives.
He admitted to being involved in multiple physical confrontations with the victim after he was aware that she was pregnant, officers say. Detectives say he also admitted to causing multiple injuries to the victim that led to the death of the unborn child.
Cheavis was arrested for second degree feticide and two counts of second degree battery. He was jailed at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex where he awaits bond hearing.
