BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta was indicted in Baton Rouge on charges that he used campaign funds to fuel his gambling. His attorney says he surrendered Wednesday and bonded out of jail.
Attorney Martin Regan said Peralta will travel to the courthouse in Baton Rouge Thursday to file paperwork requesting a speedy trial.
"He's got an election in October, and he wants to get this behind him," Regan said.
The grand jury handed down three charges of filing false campaign finance reports and three charges of perjury to Peralta.
A judge issued an arrest warrant and set a $15,000 bond for Peralta.
Peralta went before the grand jury at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in Baton Rouge around 11 a.m. saying he was eager to put this matter behind him, as he went in into the courthouse.
The state dropped sexual battery charges against Peralta several weeks ago.
Peralta was originally accused of raping his ex-wife, Sharon Schaeffer, but Peralta's attorney has filed new court documents claiming the grand jury which indicted him relied on perjured testimony.
Peralta's attorney is trying to get the attorney general's office recused from the case. This is the fourth grand jury that has looked into Peralta's affairs.
