St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta testified before a grand jury Wednesday morning.
In an unusual move, his attorney said Peralta is trying to stop an indictment.
Peralta went before the grand jury at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in Baton Rouge. Around 11 a.m. He said he is eager to put this matter behind him, as he went in into the courthouse. However, it is unclear what this grand jury is looking into.
The state dropped sexual battery charges against Peralta several weeks ago. Louisiana Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell was also in chambers.
Peralta was originally accused of raping his ex-wife, Sharon Schaeffer, but Peralta's attorney has filed new court documents claiming the grand jury which indicted him relied on perjured testimony.
Peralta's attorney is trying to get the attorney general's office recused from the case. This is the fourth grand jury that has looked into Peralta's affairs.
Sources say they could wrap up their work by early afternoon.
