NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - An Orleans Parish Sheriff's Deputy has been arrested for smuggling drugs into Orleans Parish Prison.
Rubin Robertson, 27, faces numerous charges, including malfeasance in office, possession of hydrocodone and marijuana and six counts of "introducing contraband" to Orleans Parish jail.
Robertson was arrested on Wednesday and booked just before 2 a.m. Thursday morning. Sheriff Marlin Gusman said Robertson was caught in possession of drugs and cigarettes. Investigators do not think this was Robertson's first time.
"Part of what makes this really bad is these deputies are in a position of trust," Gusman said.
There have been 17 similar cases investigated since 2014, with some officers being terminated, according to the sheriff.
Gusman said he will consult with the district attorney's office and that other charges are possible.
Robertson was hired by in July. He was fired following his arrest.
