14-year-old killed in high-speed crash on US 190

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - State police are investigating a fatal crash that killed one 14-year-old and results in DWI charges for another.

LSP troopers pulled over a car going over 100 miles-per-hour on US 190 in a 55 mph zone just after midnight on May 9. According to police the driver was a 14-year-old boy that they believe was under the influence.

While interviewing the 14-year-old driver outside of the vehicle the front-seat passenger, 21-year-old Brandon Bigner, jumped into the driver's seat and drove away from the traffic stop. The troopers performing the stop immediately secured the 14-year-old driver in their patrol car and notified State Police to be on the look out for the vehicle.

State police said the car was already out of sight and the troopers who performed the traffic stop did not chase Bigner when he drove away.

About two miles from the scene of the traffic stop, police came upon the scene of a high-speed crash involving the vehicle that fled the scene and an 18-wheeler.

Detectives believe that Bigner swerved across oncoming traffic and was hit by the truck. Bigner was thrown from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries. He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

A 14-year-old passenger, Sloan McDow from Folsom, was in the vehicle and died on the scene. LSP says he was properly restrained in the back seat.

The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained minor injuries during the crash and is not believed to be under the influence of alcohol.  Police believe Bigner may have been under the influence of alcohol during the crash. Blood samples were taken from both drivers and tests are pending.

Police arrested the 14-year-old driver for speeding and underage DWI. Bigner will not be charged until he is released from the hospital.
