ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A pregnant mother was seriously injured in a car accident with a garbage truck Sunday morning.

According to the St. Tammany Fire Department, a sedan carrying the woman along with her husband and their two children collided with a garbage truck on Highway 437, just north of Covington. The woman is six months pregnant.

Officials say the sedan and garbage truck were traveling southbound on the highway when the garbage truck turned left and was struck by the sedan. The impact cause the truck to roll over and parts of the sedan to crash in on itself, trapping the woman inside.

Firefighters and medics from St. Tammany Fire District 12 extracted the pregnant woman from the wreck and airlifted her to the Northoaks Hospital to be treated for severe injuries. Her condition, and the condition of the unborn child, are not known at this time.

Minor to moderate injuries were reported for all other passengers involved in the accident.

State police are investigating.
