An Amtrak passenger train crashed into a flatbed truck Sunday, killing it's driver.
The truck was on the train tracks located at the intersection of Highway 51 and Pope Lane just north of Amite, according to Amite Fire Chief Bruce Cutrer. More than 170 passengers were evacuated from the train and sheltered at the Greater Refuge Temple. Two passengers sustained minor injuries, and treated at a nearby hospital. No crew members were harmed.
The train was headed for New Orleans. Buses will transport the passengers to their destinations, according to Cutrer.
It is not clear why the vehicle was on the train tracks. That particular crossing does have a stop sign and crossing bars, according to Cutrer.
