Members of the Insurance Information Institute are in New Orleans this week to talk about the latest industry news.
Experts say now is a good time to look over your homeowner's insurance policy and make sure it's keeping up with your house and its contents.
You can't make changes to coverage when there's a storm threatening and flood insurance has a 30-day hold before it takes effect.
"After Katrina, a lot of people bought flood coverage but then they let it lapse when there hasn't been another flood reminder," says Lynne McChristian of the Insurance Information Institute. "But flood coverage is something everyone needs to seriously consider, even if you live in a low-risk zone. There's no such thing as a no flood zone."
McChristian says it's also important for renters to consider coverage for contents and flood insurance.
