COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - Police say a joyride gone wrong led to the death of a Brandon Bigner, 21, and Sloan McDow, 14.
The deadly crash happened Saturday morning on Highway 190 near 1077 in Covington.
State troopers initially pulled over the Chevy Cobalt while another 14-year-old was driving well above 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. While the trooper questioned the driver, Bigner, who was in the passenger seat, jumped in the driver seat and drove off, according to the trooper.
Bigner lost control a few miles down the road and crashed into an oncoming 18-wheeler. McDow who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
Bigner was ejected from the car and died Monday afternoon.
"Just how it unfolded from a traffic stop into the individual jumping into the driver's seat trying to flee the scene. If you take away any one of these little pieces, it could unfold extremely different," Trooper Evan Harrell said. "You've got the unfortunate 14-year-old who was restrained in the backseat and he paid the ultimate price for someone else's poor decisions."
Police are awaiting a toxicology report but suspect Bigner was intoxicated. Investigators are unsure if McDow was drinking as well.
The other 14-year-old was charged with underage drinking, driving without a license and speeding.
