NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Former Orleans Parish School Board member Ira Thomas has pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge. Thomas took a $5,000 bribe to secure a janitorial contract with Orleans Parish public schools.
Thomas was indicted in the federal bribery case two months ago and pleaded not guilty. He changed his plea Wednesday afternoon.
Prosecutors allege Thomas took the money to help an unidentified person get a school system contract.
At a hearing back in March, Thomas waived his right to have a grand jury hear the case, signaling he was cooperating with prosecutors.
Thomas resigned from the Orleans Parish School Board and as police chief at Southern University in New Orleans after he was charged with his crime.
He is scheduled to be sentence in August.
