NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Drivers coming from eastern New Orleans, the French Quarter or CBD will want to avoid I-10 westbound from the Westbank/Claiborne Avenue exit to the Broad Street overpass this weekend because it will be closed due to construction.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will begin $1.3 million dollars of repairs to the interstate over Julia Street starting Friday at 10 p.m. and lasting through Monday at 6 a.m.
Traffic will need to exit I-10 West at the Westbank/Claiborne Avenue exit. The Poydras Street entrance ramp to I-10 westbound will be completely closed to all traffic. The closure will not affect drivers coming from the Crescent City Connection who are trying to use the Pontchartrain Expressway.
The North Claiborne Ave. entrance ramp to I-10 West will also be closed in order to reduce traffic on the interstate. Drivers should take the ground level Claiborne Avenue to reach Tulane Avenue.
Crews will be replacing a steel cross beam and an expansion joint that crosses I-10 westbound.
To avoid traffic delays, motorists traveling from the New Orleans East/Slidell areas should exit I-10 West at I-610 to reach destinations beyond the closure. Motorists who reach the closure point and want to continue onto I-10 West will be directed to the Canal Street/Superdome exit (Exit 235B) to detour to Tulane Avenue and reenter I-10 West at the I-10/US 61(Tulane Avenue) interchange.
Work is expected to wrap up on the project in June.
