Bunkie, LA (WVUE) - A Covington couple was killed in a serious wreck Friday in Evangeline Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.
Investigators say Austin Jones, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Destinee Jones, 24, died later at Opelousas General Hospital.
State police say both of them were wearing seatbelts.
According to Trooper Brooks David, a 1-year-old child was in the back seat and was properly restrained. The baby suffered minor injuries.
David said the three vehicles involved in the crash were headed north on Interstate 49. At around 1 p.m. near the Bunkie exit, lightning struck a 2013 Chrysler, and the car became disabled in one of the lanes, David said.
The driver of an International Wrecker truck managed to pull to a stop before striking the Chrysler, David said, but the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Austin Jones was driving could not stop.
It struck the wrecker from behind. The impact caused the wrecker to move forward and strike the Chrysler, David said.
The Chrysler's driver and his three passengers were wearing seatbelts and suffered minor injuries, David said.
David said investigators do not believe impairment by any of the drivers was a factor in the accident.
