70-year-old bicyclist killed in collision with off-duty NOPD officer: Swipe for details

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A 70-year-old bicyclist was killed on Sunday night following a collision with an off-duty New Orleans police officer.

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and South Claiborne Avenue.

Witnesses tell police that the bicyclist was traveling northbound on Martin Luther King Boulevard. For unknown reasons, officers say the bicyclist disregarded a red light and collided with a gray Ford F-150 pickup traveling eastbound on South Claiborne Avenue.

The truck was driven by 35-year-old New Orleans police officer Eric Prinz, who was on his was home after his shift, officers say.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. Prinz was not injured in the crash.

Blood and toxicology tests are pending. The incident remains under investigation.
