MARRERO, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a single car crash that claimed the life of a Houma man. The incident occurred Monday, just before 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 3134 and Highway 45 in Marrero.
Police say that 25-year-old Edgar Santos Gonzalez was driving his SUV north on Hwy 3134 when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road to the right and landed in a ditch. After the vehicle rolled over, it came to rest on its roof, partially underwater.
A passing motorist stopped and pulled Gonzalez's SUV out of the ditch but couldn't anyone inside the vehicle. Following a search nearby, Gonzalez's body was found in the water. The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office pronounced Gonzalez dead on the scene.
Investigators determined that he was not wearing his seat belt and that he was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. It is unknown if Gonzalez was impaired and police say that results from a toxicology test are pending. Police also say that it was raining heavily at the time of the incident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
