NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Police are searching for a gunman involved in a shootout with New Orleans police officers.
The incident happened just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle near the intersection of Alvar and Chickasaw streets in the Desire area.
Police say they observed a white Malibu change lanes without using a turn signal. The vehicle was later found to be stolen.
Officers say they tried to approach the vehicle on foot, but the suspect sped away in the vehicle.
New Orleans police gave chase. Officer say the suspect threw a firearm out of the vehicle during the pursuit.
The suspect allegedly fired at officers near the intersection of A P Tureaud Ave. and N. Broad Street. Police returned fire.
The suspect exited his vehicle near the intersection of Abundance and Bruxelles streets and fled on foot, police say. A perimeter was set up but the suspect managed to escape.
Police do not believe the suspect was injured during the incident. No officers were injured.
Officers say a handgun was found during the search. Police are searching for a second firearm that the suspect allegedly threw from the vehicle.
