NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Congressman Cedric Richmond wants the Department of Justice to investigate the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.
He sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch Wednesday, asking her to investigate alleged abusive patterns and practices.
"We can no longer allow the abusive culture that has permeated IPSO to go unchecked," said Rep. Richmond. "The accounts of discrimination, abuse, and even deaths occurring as a result of the actions of deputies clearly illustrate a pattern and practice that systematically violates the basic rights of citizens. It is imperative that the Department of Justice step in and correct this conduct before there is any more loss of life."
Richmond cites multiple incidents, including the death of a man who was shot while handcuffed in the backseat of a squad car.
He says recent unrest in communities across the country shed light on a feeling many people have about being unfairly targeted by police.
Richmond has not said whether the Attorney General has responded.
