NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Heavy rain Thursday night soaked the sand volleyball courts at Laketown in Kenner, prompting tournament officials to cancel Friday's matches.
The matches will resume on Saturday and Sunday.
Play in the men's open qualifying tournament was halted at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday due to lightning.
The women's qualifier was completed, with 18 teams being pared down to four survivors who will join the 16-team double-elimination main-draw bracket.
Laketown at Kenner, La. will be home to the AVP New Orleans Open. It's the center for the best beach volleyball players in the world - including three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, Olympic gold medalists Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, Olympic silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, two-time Olympians Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal.
General admission for the AVP New Orleans Open is free.
