NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A suspect struck an Orleans Parish sheriff's deputy with a vehicle while fleeing a traffic stop, officers say.

The incident happened Monday morning near the intersection of Canal and Basin streets, close to Saenger Theatre.

The deputy fired at the suspect vehicle, officers say. The deputy felt threatened enough to fire his weapon, according to Phil Stelly with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.

Deputies are unsure if the suspect was injured in the incident.

Deputies say they later found the suspect's empty vehicle near the intersection of Dumaine and Robertson streets.

Officials say the deputy was not seriously injured. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in this type of procedure.
