Coroner releases name of HANO officer found shot to death in patrol car

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The Orleans Parish coroner has released the name of a HANO officer who was found shot to death Sunday.

Dr. Jeffrey Rouse identified the officer as 45-year-old James Bennett Jr.

According to NOPD Supt. Michael Harrison, Police responded at about 7:10 a.m. to a report from HANO that one of their officers was shot. When NOPD officers arrived, they found the officer dead inside his marked police car. Detectives believe he was shot in the 2300 block of Erato Street and his car continued to roll forward, coming to a stop after striking a curb at the intersection of Freret and Erato.
