KENNER, LA (WVUE) - Severe weather rolled through the New Orleans area Tuesday morning, leaving behind a path of destruction.
The National Weather Service confirms that a tornado touched down in Kenner early Tuesday morning. Survey crews are currently on the scene and working to determine the strength of the system.
At least four businesses in Kenner suffered heavy storm damage, according to Kenner officials. The roof of Southeast Telecom collapsed as the storm pushed through around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Walls of the business are caving in.
Wind damage is visible throughout the area. Downed wires and tree limbs line the streets nearby. Kenner firefighters say it sounded like a freight train as strong winds pushed through.
High winds also caused several barges to break loose and enter the Parish Line Canal. They are now resting near Lake Pontchartrain and the Coast Guard is headed to that area, according to the Levee District.
The National Weather Service has a survey crew in Kenner currently accessing the damage.
