NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Forecasters have released their predictions for the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced their initial outlook for the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season during a news conference in New Orleans.

The forecast includes:

6-11 named tropical storms

3-6 hurricanes

0-2 major hurricanes (category 3 or higher)

Officials say this is a below average prediction for a hurricane season. This is not a prediction of landfall.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu was on hand along with Joen Nimmich, FEMA's Deputy Administrator. NOAA also highlighted new products designed to combat the deadly effects of storm surge and announce new modeling advancements.

June 1 marks the first day of the 2015 hurricane season.
